I wrote this thinking about Ralph Stanley, the great bluegrass artist with the high lonesome sound.  I started by trying to figure out his song, The Darkest Hour, but then I thought it’d be more fun to try to write my own, the same but different.  I think a lot of folk songs were conceived of in this way, as more or less a copy of something truly great. Actually, it’s very humbling to compare my song to his.  Maybe I should not have made the comparison.  Well, you don’t have to eclipse the masters to benefit from studying them.

OH how sweet it is! As you know, Dr Ralph is one of my all time heroes. This song makes me proud that you wrote it with him in mind. He is certainly a legend in his time. Keep up the great writing—love ya!
